Simple Memories: Lessons From a Tub of Face Cream

They say there is no such thing as time travel, but today I would disagree…

I bought a tub of Oil of Olay face cream (you see, my face is starting to show its 40 years and I have finally had to invest in wrinkle cream…) and this morning when I opened it and went to slather it on…

I was immediately brought back in time.

The smell transported me back to my Grandma’s house, there at night watching TV shows with her and staying up late. I was all tucked into bed (“…snug as a bug in a rug..” my Grandpa would say…and “Good Night dolly.”)

And Grandma would go into the bathroom in her dark pink robe, and come out ready for bed and there was that smell…the oil of olay face cream.

Such a simple moment–opening up the tub of face cream–but such a powerful memory.

Smells...they really can transport you back in time.

I am grateful for memories like that. And it once again brings me to my present and glancing toward my future. What will my babies remember of me…what smells or other things will bring them back to this day perhaps?

Lord, help me make memories that are warm and filled with love, and most of all that reflect your love. So these things can pass from generation to generation.

I posted this on the Facebook page recently:

How can I teach my children about the joy of the Lord if I am not joyful? How can I reflect His love, mercy, and grace if I am nagging, complaining, and sullen? Too often my children see me doing the latter because I am focused on me. Bleh. But when I focus on Him and doing His work and living for Him and not myself, the joy radiates. That is what I want them to know. If I teach them anything in this life, let it be that we find joy in the Lord! May I reflect Him to my children.

This summer, I am hosting a women’s retreat in Gettysburg, PA. In a world of excess, we are going to focus on that fact that Jesus is enough. The world will tell you YOU are enough. But truly, HE is enough. He is all we need. We don’t rely on ourselves, or earthly comforts, but on Him alone.  I have lived with it all stripped away, and I have seen that yes, Jesus is enough. In fact, Jesus is MORE than enough.

Early Bird Registration is Open! Join us for this life-changing and life-giving event. You will spend two days with other sisters in Christ, tired of what the world offers, and ready to live the life that HE offers.
