The Barrenness All Around Us

“It was not homesickness which weighed heavy on my heart, but the barrenness all around me, the empty shells of men, the pervasive feeling of despair that, like the stale air, fill the dust dim-lit dormitory.”

We are currently reading Charles Colson’s Born Again, and today this line has struck me to the core. Charles Colson served time in prison for Nixon’s Watergate scandal, but in the process became a born-again Chrisitan. This line described what it was like for him at night when he felt the loneliness and despair, not for himself, but of those men surrounding him in the prison. Because He knew Jesus, but those around him did not. The barrenness he felt was in their souls.

That line depicts life without Jesus. Whether in prison or in a kitchen surrounded by kids, without Jesus, there is barrenness.

So while the story of Colson’s transformation and life goes on to tell that of one with ministry in prison (and praise God for that!) it hit me that we can all relate to that notion of those around us and feeling their despair. We are surrounded by such barrenness daily when we live in a world where many do not know Christ.

It tugs at my soul. I do know what it is like to live in utter darkness. And I don’t want anyone else to experience that without knowing there is HOPE! And His name is Jesus.

So, we, as ordinary women living ordinary lives, have the opportunity daily to lift just one person out of that darkness by pointing them to Jesus. How will you do that today?

Simply Sharing Jesus (Billy Graham)

Simply Go! is a new initiative of the Simply Living for Him ministry that focuses on missional living in the lives of everyday women. Based on Acts 4:13, which describes the disciples as ordinary men who had been changed by an extraordinary God, and those around them simply recognized that they had been with Jesus. As we begin to approach Spring, we have some ideas that we will move forward with for our Simply Go! initiative. We will share resources, new challenges, and encouraging blog articles about being missional in your everyday life.

We want to encourage you that you can be missional right where you are–in your home, community, and everyday life. You simply need to reflect Jesus! So while Simply Living for Him provides resources to help you spend time with Jesus, Simply Go! is the next step in then shining that light!

This world is getting darker each day and it is our duty and privilege to shine the light of Christ! You will find challenges, ideas, encouragement, and resources in this section.

Front Porch Revivals

This Spring, as the weather warms up, the sun begins to shine, the flowers bloom, and new life bursts all around, let’s focus on helping others find their NEW LIFE in Christ!

The winter often keeps us shuts in, the cold and dark days leave us a bit lonely, and we can be a bit isolated. But with each new day moving towards warmer days, I am inspired with ways to build more relationships with others. It only takes a smile, a kind word, or a gesture to begin building a relationship. And when you know God’s love, you can’t help but to reflect that love to those around you!

This Spring, we want to encourage you to get outside and perhaps out of your comfort zone a bit, and invite people to your front porch! Don’t have a front porch? Then head over to a local park, strike up a conversation, be willing to let Jesus work through you.

We often think we need to have the courage to share or all the right answers. But the Holy Spirit works in us. We just need to be willing.

So as the warm weather moves in, get out. Sit on your porch. Wave at passersby. Offer a cup of tea even! You never know what a simple smile and, “Hello, how are you?” can lead to. Go to the park. Strike up a conversation. Offer to pray for someone. You just may be the someone they need after a long winter.

Share Jesus Without Fear

From the description:

In recent years, the Share Jesus without Fear book and its growing family of ancillary products have sparked a faith-sharing movement that continues to gain momentum. It began with the jaw-dropping story of William Fay, once a money-driven businessman with Mafia ties who ran a house of prostitution until it was raided by police. Facing the threat of jail time, Fay turned to Jesus Christ for redemption and ever since has been turning others to Him as well. Share Jesus without Fear relays Fay’s passionate, effective instructions on how to share the love of Christ with anyone–without feeling intimidated on either side of the conversation. Bold and joyful, the outreach movement continues without fear.

I read this book a few months back and it was inspiring. I highly recommend it! Here at Simply Go! we are encouraging everyday women to be missional in their everyday lives, and Share Jesus Without Fear is a great resource to equip you to get started!

Our Words in the World

We just finished up a beautiful month of loving our neighbors. If you missed it, we have a free downloadable calendar from February that shared one idea each day for loving those around us. Yet, it doesn’t have to be February to do any of these ideas! You can grab the calendar at any time and use those ideas at any time.

As we begin to approach Spring, we have some ideas that we will move forward with for our Simply Go! initiative. We will share resources, new challenges, and encouraging blog articles about being missional in your everyday life. And that brings me to the topic I wanted to share today: our words.

Our words matter in the world. We are representing Christ in each moment of our lives. So how are you using your words today as an ambassador of Christ?

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29 NIV

In a world that is filled with negative words, derogatory words, divisive words, and hurtful words, we have an opportunity to show Jesus in our words.

What we don’t say matters

When we don’t join in with the rhetoric and we don’t share every negative news story or commentary, it actually speaks volumes. When our “agenda” isn’t to tear down the other side, but to simply share the good, it matters. When our words come from a place of love, it is impossible to speak ugly. We will be noticed for what we don’t say. There is enough of the negative to go around, let’s share the positive.

What we do say matters

When our words speak life, edify, and most importantly are spoken from a place of love, it will be noticed. Our words of love will stand out in a world that is filled with division. We are to ultimately want to show Jesus to others and we won’t do that with ugly words.

So remember today, your words matter. They are a reflection of your own walk with the Lord. Use them well. Shine His Light. And all for His glory.
