One of the subjects we do not use the Bible as our text is math. We use Math-U-See for each child’s level.  However, there are plenty of ways that we supplement with activities based in the Bible for math for extra practice.

Since we are studying Genesis, we have studied Creation through the Flood and are now on the Tower of Babel.  Here are some corresponding math activities for various levels that go along with these studies. I really enjoy adding in extra things like this to tie everything together.

  • Determine the size of Noah’s ark in comparison to various real life place/things- you can even visit a football field (Noahs ark was 450  ft. or 1.5 football fields) to give an idea of length
  • practice counting by two’s since Noah brought each animal in pairs
  • research the number seven and its Biblical meaning
  • ordinal numbers and the importance of order (Creation)
  • Genesis 5 Math problems based on the generations from Adam to Noah
  • Genesis Math Problems (part 2)
  • counting games based on 40 (from Noah’s ark, 40 days/nights)
  • calculate how long Noah and his family were on the ark based on Genesis 6-9
  • practice sorting with little ones -based on Creation study and animal classification

Science and Using the Bible as Your Main Text

Science and the Bible go hand in hand. There is so much in there for what we are studying this year, which is Genesis. So far we have studied Creation through the Flood. I am sure we could spend all year on this section alone and have enough science in there!

We have been using mostly resources from Answers in Genesis to learn about creation science.  We’ve learned about animals, classification of animlas, plants, geology, fossils, dinoasaurs, extinction, evolution vs creation, etc.  There really is so much.

Just tonight my preschooler (while in the bath) said, “Mommy, do I have a vertebrate?”

Yes, I think we are learning lots. 🙂

Some fun extra activities we have done for science and the Bible in the past few weeks:

  • Made a fossil using this experiment
  • Practiced classifying things-
  • Made a three foot model of Noah’s Ark from Answers in Genesis- learned about the scale of the vessel, etc.
  • Reports on animals of each child’s choice
  • Reports on dinosaurs
  • Reports on fossils
  • Discussions about genes (when studying generations from Adam to Noah)/ Made Family tree
We’ve watched several video that were thought provoking and always spurred great discussion. These were our favorites:

I think the most important thing to remember when schooling this way is that much of the learning takes place naturally and not artificially divided into certain subjects. For instance some weeks have tons of science (Creation, Flood, etc.) while others may have more history or writing bent. I enjoy incorporating the subjects in as they come, and feel confident we are covering quite a bit of ground.

Preschooling with the BIBLE

Incorporating my preschooler into our studies this fall has been loads of fun! We are using the Bible as our main textbook, and are currently studying the book of Genesis.  I have found so many amazing resources to help him jump right in and be a part of our learning each day.

Some things he has done or is doing with us:
  • Made  a minbook for Noah’s ark using this printable
  • Learned about animal classification
Playing a game using mega blocks to sort by color to explain classification

Sorting games with beans for more classification learning

  • We are using these fabulous letter coloring pages
  • We also use flash cards to jump to the letters I call out (sort of like Hullabaloo with our own twist!)

  • We’ve made a mini book about the days of Creation
  • Colored rainbow pictures when we talked about the Flood and God’s promise
  • The preschooler has joined in all of our video watching and read alouds
  • His older siblings read books to him about Adam and Eve, Creation, and Noah’s Ark
  • We’ve been reading lots of books about dinosaurs
  • Made a family tree when we learned about the family line from Adam to Noah
It’s been really rather simple and natural to include activities for all different age groups while studying Genesis. The preschooler has fit right in and I’m excited to have us all digging into the Bible together.

Writing Assignments With the BIBLE as Your Main Text

Welcome to the 10 Day series of Homeschooling with the BIBLE as Your Main Text. I will be sharing all that we have been doing this fall since we have decided to use our Bible as our main textbook. I am joining the iHomeschool Network’s Homeschool Hopscotch! Be sure to go over and check out so many awesome topics for this huge blog hop!

Today I will focus on writing assingments and how this looks when we are using the Bible as our main text. We have been using this way of homeschooling this fall and are currently in the book of Genesis.
I have assigned various writing assignments based on the text we are in for the week. I assign different tasks for each child.

Examples for Genesis that we have worked on so far this year:
Creation week:

  • Imagine you are in the garden of Eden. Describe what life is like? (all ages)
  • How would you explain to an atheist your belief that God created the earth in six literal days? (6th grader)
  • Write a poem about how you feel about being created special and unique by God. (2nd grader)
  • Report on an animal of your choice, highlighting the special characteristics that are unique other animal showing how God created it. Inclue classification of the animal. (all ages)
  • Illustrate the six days of creation with a description of each day (all ages)
The Flood:
  • Imagine you are on the ark. Describe the conditions. (all ages)
  • Write a one page essay on the evidence for a global flood (6th grader)
  • Describe what the Ark looked like (size, materials, etc.) (all ages)
  • Write a newspaper article about the occurrence of a worldwide flood! (4th and 6th grader)
  • Write a report about dinosaurs or fossils and their proof of a worldwide flood (4th and 6th grader)
Creation Vs. Evolution
  • Write an essay telling why creation is what you believe. Dispute evolution. (6th grader)
  • Write about an animal that defies evolution (all ages)
No matter what passages in the Bible you are studying, there are ways to assign writing based them, whether it be creative writing, poetry, narrative, or informational.  Be creative, and get them writing!
Writing assignments based on our Bible passages have been not only fun, but a great way to put our skills into practical use. My daughter, who is an aspiring writer, came up with a really great idea this week for a series of kids books, based on what we have learned. I am encouraging her to write, write, write.  She has been inspired by the materials, and now I will help her pursue it. I just love when learning becomes passion!
