Lessons from George Muller

Our homeschooling is going really well with using the Bible as our main textbook. We are now studying Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Esau, and Jacob.  So many lessons to learn in there. We have had a great time reading about Ancient Israel for history. We made some matza this week which was a highlight. The kids LOVED it. We talked about it not needing yeast (science) and why it was eaten in abundance in ancient times. Next week we will continue in Genesis with Jacob and Esau.

George Muller: The Guardian of Bristol's Orphans (Christian Heroes: Then & Now)

In the afternoons we have been reading George Muller. I am beyond speechless by this amazing book. I had known about George Muller and that he was a missionary, and his faith was what enabled him to do such amazing work with orphans. Yet, I hadn’t read any books about him. When we received an anonymous gift in the mail awhile back, with my husband being out of work, in my excitement I texted a few of my friends. I was praising God. One of my dear friends wrote back, “Just like George Muller!”  That stayed with me for awhile and I decided we should read the book.

Well, I am fighting back tears with every chapter. Sometimes with every paragraph. It’s like God chose this book for us to read right at this moment. He planned my friend to say those words to point me to the book, which ultimately points to HIM.

A brief summary so you can understand why I am loving this book: George Muller was not a Christian in his youth. He studied religion, but his heart was hard. Until he had an encounter with God after prayer and he decided to let God provide for Him solely. (He had previously been known for stealing money.)

He ends up with a desire to serve the poor and the orphans. He does not take any money for his work or ask for donations. He relies sloely on prayer and God’s provision. And boy does God provide! And we are only half way through  the book…Simply amazing!

There is one section where he talks about getting rid of the “stuff” and possessions in his home because it hinders Him from doing God’s work. It was like my heart to simplify was right there. I knew what He meant! Yet, He was truly living it out. Love it.

I can’t help but see the lessons that God is wanting me to learn. About faith and about God’s provision, but most of all about seeking HIM first, for He knows what we NEED. If we seek Him first, He will provide for all of our needs…(not necessarily wants!)

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33
“There was a day when I died; died to self, my opinions, preferences, tastes and will; died to the world, its approval or censure; died to the approval or blame even of my brethren or friends; and since then I have studied only to show myself approved unto God.”
~George Muller

Simple Food- As God Intended It To Be…

As New Year’s approaches so many people make resolutions about eating healthier. Yet, I am learning that there is so much more to eating healthier than losing weight or “looking good.” It is about being healthy, but most of all, God has given us all we need in our food for health- and He has designed the food system to work quite efficiently to keep us healthy.  Yet, as a society we have compromised His plan.

For the last week or so, my husband and I have been enjoying some quiet time after the kiddies go to bed- by watching documentaries on Netflix. We have been watching ones specifically that deal with our food system, farming, and how the food industry has made our food much less healthy in the past few decades with the industrialization of farming.

I highly recommend being informed about these things. Not only is the food we eat processed, it is nutritionally deficient. The way that our food is made nowadays is based on making the most for the least amount of money, and it doesn’t matter if health is compromised- not the way we were intended to eat.

What I find fascinating is how it can be looked at biblically. How we as humans have messed with things that were designed by our Creator to be a certain way. God is simply amazing in how he designed the food system to work. How the animals and plants work together to compete cycles of fertilization and growth. Yet, when us humans get in there and upset things, we end up with disease and things are out of balance.

Now more than ever our society is dealing with high rates of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity-
all effects of what we have created by interfering with the way food is supposed to grow and be eaten. Another effect of the fall of man.

When we see the beauty of how God has created nature, and how we are supposed to respect His creation, then we can enjoy the health from His creation. Yet, when we tamper with what is perfectly created we are left with deficient and unhealthy consequences.

I am simply intrigued at learning more about how to make better choices for my family, and keep in line with God’s intention for us. The results will be healthier food, healthier people, and a healthier earth.

Simplifying food. It is another way to simplify our lives to keep our focus on Him. After all, He created our food- so we can focus on Him when we focus on eating the way He intended us to.

I plan on incorporating these movies and lessons into our school lessons for health- tying it all into using the Bible as our Main Text in January. There is so much to learn about science, biology, health, nutrition, etc.- all from His Creation.

These are highly recommend if you are interested in learning more:

Christmas Lessons and Using the Bible as Our Main Text

Welcome! Have you subscribed to this blog yet? You will be encouraged to simplify all areas of your life… straight to your email!  Subscribe here!

This week we are focusing on writing and history. We are still learning about the prophecies fulfilled through Jesus as Messiah, as well as the genealogies in the Gospels.  We are also reading the Christmas passage in Luke each day.

We found a wonderful resource from Focus on the Family that we used in our learning about the person of Luke.  We are learning about the historical facts of the events of Jesus. We learned about the historical events taking place during the time of Jesus’s birth and His death-and the persecution in the church afterwards. We talked a great deal about how these are real accurate events and are not just “stories.”

Activities this week involved:

Younger kids: Imagine you are a shepherd in the field the night Jesus was born- write a story about the events that took place.

Older- Write a 2 page essay telling about how Jesus fulfilled the prophecies in the Bible

All- Write a fact sheet about all you learned about Luke {the person} this week. Also,
draw a picture of what you think Luke looked like

Copywork: We used Isaiah 9:6 for dictation, copywork, and handwriting practice {cursive and manuscript}:

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

We are still using spelling words from Luke for our spelling lessons on Spelling City.

Resources used this week: (besides the BIBLE)

Child of Promise– Focus on the Family Radio Theater. Really wonderful audio drama about Luke and his quest to write the book of Luke. I learned so much from this!
