25 Days of Simple Christmas-A Simple Story

Today, I share with you, “A Simple Story.”  I wrote this awhile back and reposting it, because it will help focus on what truly matters-hope you enjoy!

There was once a little boy, who always wanted more toys.  He had so many that he could hardly play with them all, and when he did, he never really enjoyed it.  He was always looking for the next best thing…

There was another boy, in a cabin down the road, and all he had was, well, nothing.  Nothing at all to play with.  But each day when his chores were done, he would go outside and climb the tress…pretends to be in a jungle…then he’d run through the meadow with his arms outstretched, and he was an airplane!  Then he tumbles down the hill and land among the flowers, and he basked in their beauty and thought about whoever created them….they must have been as beautiful themselves, to create something so lovely.

In the evenings, this boy was so tired from all of his activities during the day.  He had done so much.  So he lay down to sleep.

One day the first little boy got angry at his mom for not buying him his latest treasure.  “I’ll run away!” he screamed as though to punish his mom.  He ran down the road and just when he thought he’d gone too far, he really should turn around, he saw this old cabin.

His curiosity got the best of him and he peeked inside and saw the sleeping boy.  He was very curious as this boy had the face of someone he wanted to know…he had a glow about him of a happiness he had never known.

So he waited until the boy woke up.  He asked the boy, “Do you have treasures? You look so happy. You must have a great treasure.”

The boy replied, “I do. I have this whole world outside my door, and each day is a new adventure.”

The boy looked outside, and all he saw was a tree, a hill, and some flowers.

“But where? There is nothing adventurous out there.”

The boy replied, “My world is what I  make of it. Someone created this world for me, and I make the most of it each day.”

“Well,” the other boy replied, “I have nothing at my house.  No one created anything for me.  My mom keeps buying me things but they are never what I want. I want more.”

So the boy decided to go to the first boy’s house and see just what was there.  To his amazement, as he walked up the road, there was a huge house. And when he walked in, it was filled with stuff. Toys of every kind. He couldn’t even see outside of the windows, there were piles everywhere.

He asked the boy,” What is it like outside your window? Do you have a tree, a hill, or a meadow?”

“I don’t know.” the first boy replied.  “I have never seen out the window. The piles are too high.”

So the boys decided to work together, removing the piles of stuff so they could find what was out the back windows.

It took many days, then the days turned into months, but finally, a beam of light shone through the window…in their excitement, the boys raced to see what was outside the window.

To their amazement, there was not a hill…but many! Beautiful green hills, rolling all around.  And there was not a tree, but thousands.  With fruits of every kind. And oh, so fragrant!  Then there were fields of flowers, of every kind.  It was almost too great a site to see.  It was more beautiful than anything either boy could have imagined.

They dashed to the door.  But it was locked.  On the lock was a note.  It said,
“You have had this beauty outside all along.  But you could not see it, for your piles of earthly things were too high.  They covered the windows.  Now you must promise to keep the windows clear.  Keep your eyes looking out the windows each day.  Never forget what is out here, or you may quickly pile up more stuff again.”

If you can do these things, you may come outside and enjoy my creation.

Never have so much stuff inside that you can not see what has been here all along.  I AM in these hills, and these trees, and these meadows.  I created it all, and it is mine.  Live out here, and not inside with all of your things.  This beauty provides more enjoyment than anything inside.”

The boy never wanted to go back inside again. He wanted to live amongst the creation and was very sad that all these years he had missed out.

Yet, he was glad, so glad, that at that moment the Creator revealed Himself.  And he promised then that he would always live for Him.

25 Days of Simple Christmas-Andes Candies Cookies

Welcome to the 25 Days of Simple Christmas!  Each day I will be posting an idea about keeping the holidays simple- so that we can focus on Christ and the real meaning of Christmas!

While Christmas is such a special day, so much of the joy gets lost in the busyness.

Each day I will be writing about a simple way to celebrate the season.  To focus on family, joy, and memories, without the elaborate extras that can bring added stress. Simple can be more meaningful if it gives us more time to focus on the huge GIFT we are awaiting-Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Today I will introduce you to  a simple recipe, which is incredibly yummy!

Oh my. I have found the best cookie recipe ever, on Pinterest {of course!}

So easy, so incredibly tasty.

I love simple recipes. Especially at this time of year, when I would rather be spending time with the family, pondering the great event of Christmas…

While I love cooking, these cookies are a wonderful go-to recipe in a pinch… you won’t be in the kitchen long at all! I brought them to our church’s Christmas brunch and so many people asked for the recipe.

The recipe is not my own, but comes from sixsisterstuff.

Andes Candies Chocolate Cookies

1 package devils food cake mix
2 eggs
1/2 cup oil
Andes Candies Chocolate mints

Simply combine all but the candies until a nice mixed dough forms.  Drop the dough into balls on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for about 7 minutes. DO NOT OVERCOOK.  As soon as they come out of the oven, place an unwrapped candy on top.  Once all of the candies are placed on the cookies, go back and spread it around…at this point the candy will have begun melting.

Cool and enjoy these delicious, simple treats!

Welcome to the 25 Days of Simple Christmas!  Each day I will be posting an idea about keeping the holidays simple- so that we can focus on Christ and the real meaning of Christmas!

We have been reading from Luke 2 every day before we begin our homeschool. We will continue to do so this week. I don’t believe we can ever read it too much-or any of the Bible for that matter.

In this last week before Christmas Day, I am making it  a point to really be in the Word and connect with God. To wait expectantly for our Savior’s birth.

Sometimes, I can still hardly comprehend it all. The glory of it, the majesty!

Enjoy the anticipation of the greatest gift God ever gave to mankind. Jesus Christ.

25 Days of Simple Christmas-Little House on the Prairie Christmas

Welcome to the 25 Days of Simple Christmas!  Each day I will be posting an idea about keeping the holidays simple- so that we can focus on Christ and the real meaning of Christmas!

While Christmas is such a special day, so much of the joy gets lost in the busyness.

Each day I will be writing about a simple way to celebrate the season.  To focus on family, joy, and memories, without the elaborate extras that can bring added stress. Simple can be more meaningful if it gives us more time to focus on the huge GIFT we are awaiting-Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Ahhh…..I love Little House on the Prairie.  Something about the simplicity that I just love.  I know the work was hard, the wolves were prowling, the medicine was scarce, but its the feeling of simplicity I just love.

For Christmas this year we just finished reading A Little House Christmas Treasury. It was wonderful and the kids and I all loved it. Each day was a new story from a different period of time in Laura’s life growing up.

It was perfect for us, having been studying the pioneers.  It really brings history alive, since it was written by a pioneer!  So much to be learned.

We also were able to tie in our learning about pioneer Christmas this month by seeing how they celebrated Christmas back then.

We love hearing how the kids received such simple gifts at Christmas. The little girls were ecstatic to receive their very own tin cup one year. Such a stark contrast to the world we live in.

It is great to read these stories to help us to
appreciate the simple things.

This whole blog started back when I was pondering these things. As we studied history I realized how hard people worked long ago, how little they had, yet they were joyful.  Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, you feel their joy.

Joy in family, joy in the Lord, joy in community.
I often think about what those people would think of us here is 2011. We have it so easy in so many ways. Yet, do we have that simple joy?
We are running around, busy, distracting ourselves.  I imagine if those pioneers had the modern conveniences that we do, they would be so grateful. Perhaps we have gotten so far away from that hard life, we don’t appreciate just how easy we have it. In turn, we make life difficult in areas where it doesn’t have to be.
We don’t have to work so hard, just to survive.  We don’t think about surviving, we take it for granted. We don’t always appreciate the simple things.

Today we also watched some of the television episodes scenes on YouTube. I was pleased that the Christmas episode scenes are very similar to the book. The kids really enjoy seeing what we have read come alive on screen.

We also watched the first episode, Country Girls, of Season 1.

The end had me in tears {most episodes do}, but this in particular really struck me.

Laura read an essay about her ma and she stated that her ma’s smile is the last thing she sees before she goes to bed and the first thing she wants to see when she wakes up.

I want to be that kind of ma.
That my kids would feel the same about me…

I am grateful for this simple reminder today…thanks to Little House on the Prairie.
