Join me as I will be sharing all that we have been doing this fall since we have decided to use our Bible as our main textbook. I am joining the iHomeschool Network’s Homeschool Hopscotch! Be sure to go over and check out so many awesome topics for this huge blog hop!
While I stepped out in faith this year to pull together a curriclum that I made myself, I knew deep down that we would be blessed by it if even if it was hard work. God would bless our obelidnce to put Him first in everything, incuding or academic studies.
Well, He has blessed us already in so many ways. I see how doing this is really a very natural way of learning. Much more natural than just breaking up subjects and teaching them at different blocks during the day.
For instance: studying Noah’s ark propelled us into three weeks of learning about fossils and flood geology. We studied dinosaurs as well. It was tons of science and history, without necessarily sitting down and saying, “OK time to take out the science book,” and putting it down 45 minutes later. We are seeing how God has created science and how it is part of His story in His Word.
We also learned so much about geography during that time. We looked at the globe and learned about the earth’s plates, continents, oceans, etc. Agian, there wan’t a formal sit down time for each lesson-it was an extension of our Bible reading.
More importantly though, I will say that while we love learning all of those things, and while it is vitally important to learn each subject, the most exciting thing for me is what our studies are doing in our family.
To all be sitting around the dining room table each morning and reading God’s Word together each day, discussing it, and analzying it….it is almost hard to write in words how it excites me. The questions that the kids come up with-the discussions that arise-are all incredible. It has brought us closer together as a family.
And the lessons don’t stop at the dining room table. We find ourselves discussing things all throughout the day and evening-bringing up lessons we learned through God’s Word. It’s been simply beautiful.
I have seen Matthew 6:33 at work. We are seeking Him above all and He is providing for their academic needs. I see their learning exploding in all subjects, but most importantly we are getting closer to Him.
