being fully present
I want to expand on those things today.
Those things are essential for so many reasons. Most of all, if we are educating at home we have the power to foster relationships with our children that are strong, because of our time with them.
Yet, are we making the most of that time?
When we are engaged with the children in lessons, are we fully engaged? Inside and out?
Are we focusing on them fully?
They will know it when we are not.
They need our full attention, so they feel that learning is important. That it matters.
Then it will matter to them.
They need us to sit close, one on one, and look them in the eye when we speak to them.
Our minds can not be so full, that we can’t give them our full attention.
Make the most of these opportunities at home.
Let your child feel valued and let learning be valued.
When I work with my children I am making a point to close the laptop, silence the phone, and put my lists away. It is often too easy to think that I can quickly send an email while one is figuring out math problems; or make my “to-do” list while they work on a worksheet.
Yet, I can’t do that and be fully engaged with them.
Schedule time for emails, computer, list making, phone calls, etc. during non-school time. Be fully present with your kids. When we are working together, the whole mood changes. They are so glad to have my attention. I must give it willingly.
Above all else, we are teaching our children about Jesus’s love. Through our behavior, our example, and our words, we are preparing a generation to live for Him. We must make that our priority above all the daily distractions of the day. So that they can see His love, through us…
“He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments…”
