My “Nanny” made us all afghans when we were little. At my bridal shower my mom wrapped it up and I received it…Nanny had already passed away by that time..but here I received a gift from her.
It’s traveled with us from our first years of marriage til now…
Last night as I checked on my son before I went to bed, there he was sound asleep~ wrapped in Nanny’s afghan…
and it struck me…
Years before,
many years before…
Nanny sat, knitting this afghan. Never having a chance though, to see it…
wrap a pregnant mommy resting on the couch…
comfort sick kiddies in bed…
used as a roof for a fort between couch cushions…
and here, a peacefully sleeping 8 year old great-grandchild Nanny never even knew…cuddled in it…
Never underestimate a thing you do…who knows how it will affect the future.
Nanny may have knitted that afghan after a day of hard work..tired…
or while just passing time on a Saturday afternoon…
All the while, did she ever think, as the yarn wound round her fingers…{with love, I am sure…}
where her afghan would end up?
Or who it would comfort one day?
Probably not.
It was probably just stitch after stitch..loop after loop…row after row…
Isn’t that how life is sometimes?
We go through the motions, and don’t stop and realize…
everything we do can have an affect on someone else…presently…or in the future…
And here is Nanny’s afghan…
Comforting kiddies…
And there is still a future for Nanny’s afghan I am sure…comforting generations to come…
So next time I am doing an everyday task, a simple task…I will remember Nanny’s afghan…
